Garden Design Brief
The design brief for this large London back garden was to add more colour and life to the borders in four distinctive areas of the garden, divided by formal yew and beech hedging. Firstly, we reshaped and enlarged some of the beds, reducing the lawn to allow better light and soil for the plants to flourish. We retained some of the existing large shrubs which already gave the borders a fantastic backdrop, and filled the planting designs with perennials, smaller shrubs and bulbs to create a successional flow of planting all year round. We also drew up planting plans to improve the existing potager, parterre and formal garden adjoining the house.
We have installed large compost bins which has allowed us to regenerate and reuse green waste from the garden.
Insect friendly planting
Insect friendly plants are always at the front of our minds when creating planting plans for a garden. These pollinators are essential for the survival of our planet, and the success of the crops in the neighbouring veg patch. We garden organically and mulch annually to keep the soil in the best condition possible, encouraging worms and creating a great soil structure so that plants flourish.
We carefully select a diverse range of plants from specialist UK nurseries which include natives and wildflowers, as well as other strong performing cultivars, which knit together to create important habitats for pollinators throughout the year.
Bulbs for successional planting
Snowdrops planted en masse are a welcome and joyful sight at the beginning of the year before the trees come into leaf and we also plant bulbs into the lawn to add a naturalistic feel to the garden, with playful accents of colour and textures in Spring.
Planting designs for window boxes and planters
Window boxes, planters and pots create wonderful pockets of year-round interest throughout all areas of the garden, adding a succession of movable, changing and magical vistas throughout the seasons.
