Large Rooftop in Highgate, N6

Transforming an exposed and depleted Hampstead rooftop into a most desirable area for relaxing and entertaining.

Client Brief

Our brief was to transform the depleted planting on this large rooftop to create a vibrant environment with lush, immersive planting, understanding the client’s wishes to have a high impact garden during the months of April to October.

Before

Existing narrow planters were taken over by tree roots, leaving no room for additional planting.

This is a beautifully sunny spot, nestled in the trees near Hampstead Heath, and also a challenging exposed site, requiring a careful selection of plants that could cope with wind and high temperatures, akin to to coastal planting.

Choice of pots and planters

Following design discussions, twenty five large, lightweight GRP (Fibreglass) round and rectangle planters were selected in different heights and widths to create an immersive and inviting flow of plants throughout the L-shaped garden.

Large planters were selected to allow room for future plant growth and we filled these with free-draining, peat-free compost and grit to host these hardy mediterranean and coastal plants.

Plant choices

We sourced a selection of evergreen and hardy perennials from some of our favourite, small, specialist nurseries, choosing varieties with the longest flowering period that would cope with the extreme coastal-like conditions, frost, wind and drought.

Testimonial

From the initial concept through to final completion, the design and construction of my new roof garden was outstanding. The creativity, attention to detail and quality of workmanship exceeded our expectations. The project was managed seamlessly, delivered on time, and the end result is a truly exceptional space that we thoroughly enjoy. We would not hesitate to recommend NLHG.
