Understanding client's needs to create thoughtful and inspiring 2D and 3D designs.

Planting and Garden Design

NLHG offers a full garden design service to create stunning and functional outdoor spaces that work in tandem with the lifestyles of our clients. After an initial meeting to understand your requirements, we will take a survey of your garden and produce a number of rough layout options to start the design process. Once the client is happy with final layout, we will provide detailed design plans, showing the garden layout as a whole, alongside illustrated planting plans.

Costs for consultation, design and build

Consultation fees

We arrange to come and see your garden for an hour or so to understand what you need help with and to get a feel of the garden and its surrounds. For this initial consultation, we charge £250 +VAT in London, and this would be deducted from the design fee if you’d like to go ahead with the project. We send a detailed email after this visit, listing ideas and plants that we’ve discussed together.

If you’d then like to proceed, we can come up with an estimate for the design and build.

Or you may find that the consultation is all you need and these discussions have helped you make decisions about how to go forward on your own.

Design and build costs from January 2026

Our projects typically start from £1,500 design fee, with build costs from £8,000 to £200,000. A typical build in a North London terraced house back garden costing approximately £30,000-£50,000 (including a small amount of hard landscaping work).

Landscaping

We employ experienced landscapers to work on our designs. Our professionals are always mindful of London living and the often demanding accessibility to the garden, working closely with our clients to enable a smooth build and the least possible disruption.

Planting rejuvenation

Sometimes the bones of a garden are great, but the planting has become a bit jaded. We take great pleasure in redesigning gardens, keeping some of the existing plants if appropriate, boosting borders and enhancing the planting to animate the feel of the garden. With current environmental concerns in mind, we purposefully plant to attract pollinators and to add scent, colour and layers of texture wherever possible.

Ongoing maintenance

Our personal investment in the gardens we help create means we love to maintain and rejuvenate them, coming up with fresh ideas and solutions to any ongoing issues. This allows us to build on the original design over a numbers of years to suit clients’ changing needs and to form long-lasting partnerships with them.
